Toronto Wedding

We cannot deny that a wedding is the most momentous event in someone's life.  But did you know that there are a lot of traditions when it comes to weddings.  These traditions may be a general tradition or particular in one country.  There are also traditions which are carried upon from our grandparents and there are the also the modern ones.

These traditions, even if they are particular to one country or culture, can be applied in Toronto weddings.  Depending on your preference, your Toronto wedding may have a different theme from other country's tradition.  Let me enumerate some traditions from the other countries that can be applied in a Toronto wedding.

A promise of proper financial support is what the gesture of giving 13 coins by the groom to the bride symbolizes.  The coins are then blessed by a priest in order to wish the newlyweds a prosperous and abundant married life.  This tradition is from Panama.

Polish weddings are highlighted by the couple's parents giving them blessing.  The blessing uses symbols like wine for good health and happiness, rye bread for abundant table which has been dusted with salt to symbolize the hardships that they might encounter.  In this manner, the couple will learn that they have new responsibilities and with these new responsibilities come new obstacles which they can win over with the help of each other.

The Czechoslovakian traditions are interesting.  One of them is that a baby should be placed on the matrimonial bed on their wedding night in order to attract fertility.  In this manner, the new couple will be blessed with beautiful and healthy offspring.  The other is that they need to plant a tree on the yard of the bride's house and decorate it.  This states that the bride will have a longer lifespan as the tree.

But of course, there are also some North American traditions that can be applied to a Toronto wedding.  These traditions are the ones which are passed from generation to generation.

First among the North American traditions is tossing rice on the newlywed's heads.  In this tradition, rice represents a bountiful table for the couple and at the same time fertility.  Although there has been some variation these days because it attracts birds or rats so instead of using rice, people now are using confetti.

Placing tin cans behind the bridal car uses the same principle as using fireworks during New Year 's Eve celebration.  The clinking sound of the tin cans while the car is running will drive away evil spirits in order to keep the couple lucky and happy.

As unnoticeable as they can get, flowers also has a big symbolism when it comes to weddings.  The flowers represent a new 'blooming' life as newlyweds and fertility.

Finally, the most awaited kiss at the end of the wedding also has its own symbolism.  Derived from the ancient Rome tradition, the kiss serves as a seal or a 'closed deal' between the two couple.  This is where the 'sealed with a kiss' term comes from.

Toronto weddings can practice these traditions.  But remember that we are not after the tradition.  Rather, we are after seeing two people being bounded by love and willing to spend the rest of their lives together.
